Description
To be honest if you're really into the hustle-bustle of rich city-living, you probably don't mind putting up with the escalating costs of living, spiralling pollution, increasing crime and the lack of time you need for the things you want to do and to just be yourself. If you don't mind or even enjoy that then the Azores and particularly Santa Maria probably aren't for you. However, if you long to escape the above but aren't sure how, well there is a way and that way is Santa Maria. Here the biggest crime you're likely to encounter is hungry birds stealing the fruit from the trees in your orchard and as for the cost of living, pollution and a lack of time for the things that are important; If you're experiencing them, you're not here. The house is 116m2, four bedroomed and ideally situated with advantageous views in rural Santo Espirito. It has over 5,000m2 of land (you can further build on up to 500m2 of that if you want). There's various sheds and glasshouses and at the very top of the land a large dilapidated that is suitable for conversion for rural tourism purposes. The land has a pond, patio, bbq and full car access.
The land is also well cultivated with a new orchard containing over 100 fruit bearing trees. And so far the vegetable plots have produced enough to keep a family of seven going strong, even enough left over to preserve to see us through the winter months. So there is great potential here for a small farm, I shouldn't really say potential, it is a small farm but there is potential to make that a commercial commodity if you wish. Or you can let it all grow over wild with flowers, up to you. Okay let's explore this 116m2 home in a little more detail. It's all on one level for a start but that is quite common here. It's all done in a large open plan way designed to be light and airy. Some of the more traditional designs can be a little dark and pokey in comparison. It has four spacious bedrooms that all command excellent and scenic vistas.
The bathroom has a huge shower specifically designed for disabled access, in fact the whole home was designed with that in mind, which is rare not just in the Azores but the world in general.
The huge open kitchen has plenty of workspace and larder storage and commands some of the best views of the property which I always like to have when preparing dinner or washing up. Seperated from the kitchen by a counter is the dining room with its purpose made table and seating arrangements. This table seats seven most nights so it's not small. The seats sat around it are in an 'L' shape and all lift up to provide useful and discreet storage. Next to the counter in the kitchen is the main door to the house.
Right next to the kitchen is the lounge, seperated from the dining room by a couch. Here again the seating arrangements have been designed to allow for discreet underseat storage. No matter how much stuff you have, there'll always be room for it in this house without making it look cluttered. There is currently no garage for your car but permission to build one is quite straightforward. In fact a lot of islanders get permission for a garage, build it, wait two months and then change it into a house because permission for a garage is given almost automatically.
Leading off from the lounge is one master bedroom and in the other direction a corridor which the other three bedrooms and the bathroom lead off. At the end of the corridor is the backdoor which leads you out to the glasshouse and the kennel where our puppies currently reside. We're located in the locality of Santo Espirito. Verdant pastures, rolling hills and very, very lush. To be exact we're in the village. From the mainroad through the village you turn off by the sculpture. And follow a narrow windy road down a country lane, beep your horn at the corner because you can't see who's coming, don't worry everyone knows that spot and is careful there. Turn left at our drive and hey presto there we are.
